Why We must pray...

Why Pray If God already knows everything?

Jeremiah 33:2-3, “This I what the Lord says, he who made the earth, the LORD who formed it and established it the LORD is his name:  Call unto me and it will answer unto thee and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not."

John Calvin of the Protestant Reformation offers the thought to this saying, “doesn’t God already know or does he have to be reminded it seems frivolous to us that we should pray as if God needs to awakened out of his sleep, in order to hear our prayers.  But it is still very important for us to call upon God in prayer because

1) That our hearts may be fired with a zealous and burning desire ever to seek, love, and serve him.

2)  That there may enter our hearts no desire and no “wish at all of which we should be ashamed to make him a witness, while we learn to set all our wishes before he eyes, and even pour out our whole hearts.

3) That we be prepared to receive his benefits with true gratitude of heart reminding us that the blessing comes to us from Him.  (Christian Institutes of the Christian Religion)
Dr. Adrian Rogers has said some very good thoughts on this issue of prayer:
First, here are two reasons we don't pray:

• We don't pray to impress God. We're not heard for our "much-speaking." You don't have to use poetic language or be an amateur Shakespeare. If an earthly child can speak to an earthly father, you can speak to your Heavenly Father. We're told to cry out to Him as our "Abba" Father — literally translated, "Daddy." (Romans 8:15, Galatians 4:6). We're not praying to impress Him.

• We don't pray to inform God. You can't tell God anything He doesn't know.
So if we don't pray to impress or inform God, why then do we pray?

We Pray to Invite God

It's very important to understand this: we are inviting God into our lives when we pray.

When we pray, we experience —

• Fellowship. We become "workers together with Him" (2 Corinthians 6:1). When we pray, God gives us the joy and privilege of administrating His kingdom, His affairs — working together with Him. He could do it without us. We could not do it without Him. But what a glory that God allows us the privilege of doing it with Him!
• Development. When we pray, God is growing us. Have you ever prayed and didn't receive immediately what you asked for? What did you do? You kept on praying, but you also began to search your heart and life to see if something was hindering God's answer. Many times there is. God uses prayer to grow us.

• Dependency. God never wants us to live lives independent of Him. If God just did everything for us and we never had to pray, soon we would begin to take things for granted. We would cease to depend upon God.

Prayer Binds Us to God
That's why we tell God what He already knows. He knows what we have need of before we ask, but we're definitely, specifically, unqualifiedly told to pray and to ask — not to impress or inform God, but to invite God, so that we might have that fellowship with Him, so that we might grow, and we would learn to depend upon Him.

O God who created the universe, O God, who created all humanity, help us to search our hearts so that your reality becomes our reality.  Your acts of creation speak to us of your power, but you act of redemption in Jesus Christ speaks to us of your love.  O God of power and love, reveal yourself to us this day through your Holy Spirit.

May God bless you to know His presence, peace and safety as you seek to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ to our world.  May there be a fusillade of grace, by way of direction, connecting and compassion that grant you success in your efforts to offer support and hope to patients and their families in the future.  Amen…..

Blessing of the Hands 2024

  Faith on the waters, unknown

2024 Theme: Buccaneers of the Seven Seas

           He spoke in parables only:

In chapter 4, St. Mark records a story of Jesus and his disciples when they set out to sea. They were going across the Sea of Galilei, 4:35-41

The account tells of Jesus' desire to go to the other side of the sea after a whole day of teaching of the mysteries of the Kingdom of God and influence of the Word of God.

Mark 4:33-34

And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it. But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone he expounded all things to his disciples.”

In the days of the Bible, many people were illiterate. They loved their family, worked to make money and negotiated with the world in order to make it through life.  Jesus did not place his words in a book for people to read because that was not how people learned. The legal, academic and ruling classes did and were thriving on being literate but not regular folks.

Jesus spoke to the people in parables because he knew that this was how they processed right from wrong, practical from impractical.  This was how they learned and made it from one day to the next. Jesus related His wisdom about the Kingdom of God in stories of which, they could relate.

This is very much like what caregivers do for their patients. The care receiver is in the moment and cannot sustain a technical conversation about how they need to feel but if the caregiver finds a story that connects with them, they will usually find success in helping to gain respect and find a way to offer personal care.

·         :  Out on the open sea

“The Sea of Galilee is about 700 ft below sea level. 13 miles long and eight miles wide. At its southern end is a deep, cliff-lined valley. The wind funneling through the surrounding hills and through this valley can whip the lake into sudden violent storms.”

These men were not greenhorns in the fishing industry. The Bible says that Zebedee, James and John's father had crews who worked for him. These men were used to what could happen on the water. But they were panicking.

Do You Not Care that we Perish?

If you have done caregiving for a good amount of time you have come across times when you did not understand why something is going wrong. The meds are not kicking in fast enough, the family member is being selfish in their concern for their loved one, the organization is not treating my patient in the right way. All kinds of issues stand in the way of making life better for the person in your hands.

What do you do?

What do I do Lord!

I got into this field to make a difference! I am here because I want to help somebody feel better! Don't you care that this issue is resolved? I am hanging on and You don't seem to be helping!  I am about to die here! Please Help me!

Just think about the last time you felt like this in your role of giving care. Now do you think that the disciples were sitting very calm and sedated asking Jesus. Master, don't you care that we are dying. NOT! They were probably yelling and hollering. Master, get up we are about to die!

How would this strike you if you were just waking up from a deep sleep? Think about it.

But Jesus had a better response.

·         Peace! Be Still!

Jesus has given us revelation to how God responds to our big issues.

Many of us have something that we can do with little effort. If you have met someone who is experienced at cooking, you will notice that they can make up a meal out of what seems to be nothing. I have met musicians who seem to use their talents to create music out of thin air. What do you do personally, what is your niche? I want you to think about that skill. The one thing you love to do. Now let's look at Jesus

The Gospel of John says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” John 1:1-3

John seems to double speak when he talks like this because He is saying, “Hey y'all, He was with God in the beginning creating with God.

Then John drops a bomb on the whole processing of intelligence by saying, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we held His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father full of grace and truth.”

I have heard people say something strange lately. That Jesus was not God but the Son of God. That is gross error. This bomb dropped on the logic of theology in the 1st Cent. Is that Jesus is one with God the Father. He is not the Father but He is one with the Father. This is beyond our understanding and if you continue to read the Gospel of John you will be blown away by what John continues to say about Him. But notice.

If Jesus is this one who was involved in the creating of the whole world. What could He not do?

Isaiah 40:28, “The LORD is the everlasting God, the creator of the ends of the earth. He doesn’t grow tired or weary. His understanding is beyond human reach, giving power to the tired and reviving the exhausted.”

Colossians 1:16 says, “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.”

Psalm 65:11 “You crown the year with Your goodness, and Your paths drip with abundance.”

The drip is the residue of what is in the cup. God's way has the drippings of abundance and why should we worry? Jesus was in the boat. Jesus was asleep. Jesus is in control of the storm and the sea and God knows what we are facing as caregivers. He is fully aware, but He is not disturbed because nothing is outside of His powerful grip and command.

This is why we can feel confident that God hears our prayers. Psalm 66:20 “Blessed be God, who has not turned away my prayer, Nor His mercy from me!”

--- So, what does this tell you about how God helps us to serve?

     * He speaks so we can understand.

*He is in the situation with us not just looking down waiting for you to mess up.

*He is ready to resolve both storms outside and inside of you.

As Jesus said to His disciples, “And lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen"

What are you saying to me chaplain?

If you believe that what you do is a calling from above. Your calling in caregiving will lead you to a deeper faith when you turn to the one who called you.  The storm you face may seem unbearable and you are right! God wants you to notice that, but He also wants you to look up to Him and call for help.

When you find yourself trying to complete your mission without God's help, remember the words of Paul to the Galatians, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.

He was encouraging them and us to not try to make it on our own efforts. The yoke of bondage is the self-centered idea that we can do anything on our own. No, we can't because God wants us to turn to Him to accomplish the mission.

When you are facing a storm, look to the Lord!

If you see a storm coming up, look to the Lord!

if you have a storm happening inside you, look to the Lord! And He will come to your rescue.  Remember: God talks to us so we can understand Him. God is in the middle of the storm with us. And God is not disturbed by the storm because He is The Creator.

    You have the right calling,

you need the challenge to grow and believe. Then you will get a taste of The Omnipotent and All Powerful One in action!

          Mark 4:33-34

And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it. But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone he expounded all things to his disciples.”

On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Ref to Psalm 107:23-32 amazing foreshadowing of this event.

Psalm 104:24 “LORD, you have done so many things! You made them all so wisely! The earth is full of your creations! And then there's the sea, wide and deep, with it countess creatures—living things both small and large. There go the ships on it, and Leviathan, which you made, plays in it!

Psalm 36:9 “For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light.”

Closing verse

“But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength; they will fly up on wings like eagles; they will run and not be tired; they will walk and not be weary.” Is 40:31

The Blessing of Hands 2023

A Life Relived Anew!

50 Jesus shouted again with a loud voice and gave up His spirit. 51 Suddenly, the curtain of the sanctuary was split in two from top to bottom; the earth quaked and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs were also opened and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. 53 And they came out of the tombs after His resurrection, entered the holy city, and appeared to many.

                                                                                                        Matthew 27:50-53 (HCSB)

The passage above is clearly stated in the gospel account of St. Matthew. I need to say, from very early in my own life I have wondered about this passage. I’m probably not alone.

Most of the Resurrection sermons I have heard come from Luke or Mark sometimes John for different reasons. But this passage alone has been at the back of my mind when it comes to the resurrection accounts.

Jesus’ resurrection brings about this amazing event of the sanctuary curtain splitting from top down to bottom during this earthquake and the miracle of the tombs of people coming open and then the bodies of saints who had fallen to sleep being raised from the dead and walking to Jerusalem! They had life again!

Now, I am not sure what you make of that but I have wondered on many levels what these verses are telling me.

The Resurrection of Jesus is the event of World History that cannot be ignored. The weight of the Christian Faith is on this event. If Jesus did not raise from the dead. Christians, we have a problem. As the Great Apostle Paul says, 17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. 18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. 19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. 1 Corinthians 15:17-19

This strange account of the dead coming back to life and being seen by many in the Holy City is sure evidence that the resurrection is an ongoing event. The event started with these people rising from the dead (not the walking dead) but they had a renewed life.  ‘We believe in Life Relived Anew!’

This event is not finished because Christ himself came back from the dead and each and every person who is connected to Jesus (union with Christ) will without a shadow of a doubt, be raised from the dead.  The doctrine that says we are joined with Christ in his death are also joined with him in the resurrection of the body.  You may say, “Hey, I’m already alive! But you will experience the power of the resurrection at the time that you need it at that last day.

The great Apostle says that we are ‘most miserable” noting that our faith is not in the great story of a dead prophet and teacher but in a risen savior who proclaimed that He is God.  He lives! He lives! Christ Jesus lives today and he has opened the great gates of heaven and brought us into the great family of God!  Hallelujah!

God made it to be Not Enough for the earth to quake at the crucifixion.  God made it Not Enough for the veil of the Temple to be torn in two from top to bottom.  But He gave us the account of PEOPLE just like you and me, who had faith and trusted him that they came back from the dead and walked into the Holy City for everyone to see that the promises of God are real and true!  We are Not disappointed at the trials, tragedies, and temptations we witness but we are affirmed in the promises of God to no end.

We are not miserable, ladies and gentlemen, we are exceptionally enthusiastic, overwhelmed with hope and filled up with joy!  Because Our Savior is alive and gives us ‘Life Relived Anew’!

Just think, the resurrection gives us a second chance! Who would like a do over? Would you like to start new today? If you are walking with Christ, the opportunity is upon you today.  Each person who was raised from the dead that day got a Do Over! They came back alive and experienced life again.  We can say that when we served people caught in the circumstances of life are down in the dumps and sad. You know Jesus offers us ‘Life Relived Anew’? We are commissioned to offer the message of the Gospel to everyone we meet and say that you can ‘Live a renewed Life!  This is amazing! All you have to do is turn to the Gospel of Matthew like I have on many occasions and read:

51 Suddenly, the curtain of the sanctuary was split in two from top to bottom; the earth quaked and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs were also opened and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised.   Now isn’t that good news?

You have been blessed with the mission to go to where there is no hope and proclaimed that The One who has overcome all circumstances offers hope.  Are you in the middle of confusion?  Jesus offers peace. Are you downcast because of the world of deceit and anger? Jesus offers truth and blessed life.  We have been given the task to go to all and offer peace, hope, and joy for a renewed life for you.

I hope to see you at the Annual Care Giver Retreat!

2022 ACGR quick recap

Making Medieval Memories !

We had a great time of reflecting on the times of when Kings and Queens ruled the day.  We looked at how we as caregivers can reflect upon our care for self and care for those whom we serve.  There was a time of community that offered companionship between caregivers. Each participant received effective reflection and words of affirmation that helped them to refresh their spirit for another year of caring from the heart.

If you missed this year’s Annual Care Giver Retreat make plans to meet us next year for a serious time of reflection, refreshing and renewal.  If you serve others with personal care you will need to be refilled with the love, compassion and vigor a loving caregiver hopes to give.

We will post some material related to the retreat later but thanks to all who could make it and get the idea that the task of caregiving is an important aspect of society and needs the support of the medical community.

Making Medieval Memories

          The Annual Care Giver Retreat

You are invited to attend the Annual Care Giver Retreat!

This year's theme is Making Medieval Memories...

As a caregiver you give a lot of your time to others to make sure their daily needs of comfort are provided.  But may we ask you?  Have you taken care of yourself lately?   Care giving, is one of the most stressful tasks that anyone can take on.  As a provider of care you are responsible for the wellbeing of those who would lack many needed services, services that may cause illness, pain, and stress.  That’s a big job.

Yet, in order to care for someone else, one must effectively take time to care for oneself. You must take time to Reflect, Restore and Recreate your own emotional vitality.   This is done by stepping away from a busy schedule and taking a breath of fresh air.

You are invited to attend ‘The Annual Care Giver Retreat’ among other caregivers just like yourself.  All attendees will be given one agenda.  That will be the task of Reflection, so that each may Restore his/her weary spirits and be involved in Recreating the attitude which has peace, purpose, and hope.

The Retreat will be held by Chaplain Horace Cutter, M.Div., BCPC.  Chaplain Cutter and the other spiritual care givers will lead the caregiver retreat in activities, reflective readings and times of solitude that will bring opportunity for margin.

It is Chaplain Cutter’s aim to schedule a time of Reflection which many nurses, social workers, hospice and healthcare workers do not get during the busy schedule they keep.  Come among the beautiful scenery at Ignatius House Jesuit Retreat Center to sooth your soul and quiet your spirit.

The Retreat will take place on Friday, May 13  from 8:00 am- 3:30pm, beginning with a mild breakfast with lunch included.  The attendance fee is $50.00 (call Chaplain Cutter (678-763-1871).

Participants will meet at Ignatius House Jesuit Retreat Center

The ACGR will be held on Friday 13th of May from 8am to 3:30pm on location at Ignatius House Jesuit Retreat Center, among the natural fragrance of flowers and lovely landscape.  The Annual Care Giver Retreat is specifically for Professional Care Givers and Professional Teachers.

We hope to see You there!
